It involved drawing with a T-square and ship curves (and lots of tracing paper) to develop what looked like a fair shape. I’m an amateur as well when it comes to boat design, but I know how I did it before computers. Sails, tents, fabric in general, adapting solar arrays, novel plywood structures…įusion has an opportunity to reach non-traditional CAD users with this capability. While there would be considerable overlap in the tool requirements, I hope the larger case is being looked at. There are many situations where there is a need to create 3D shapes from flat materials other than sheet metal. Both are now under a common heading here.

It concerned me that the Idea Station entry for Flat Pattern Development was tagged as duplicate after an Idea for Sheet Metal Tools was posted- they aren’t quite the same thing to a user- though I appreciate from a software development standpoint there is a common underpinning.

I have been following onshape / fusion and solidworks carefully and trying to decide if we dare branch into using it for complete marine yacht design, I say to all if you have a tool chain that can do a COMPLETE yacht design upto and INCLUDING manufacture than you can do anything, FOr us at xxxx this is the Holy Grail we seek. Fusion360 holds allot of hope with your CAM included but lacks in the sheet Unfolding. We have a tool Chain and every time we try to migrate to SolidWorks the hole issue of surfacing / Unfolding kicks us back to the dark ages again.

My team consists of 11 SolidWorks Drivers, 8 Rhino Drivers 0 AutoCAD Drivers plus a variety of software developers and Hardware/Firmware Developers to develop Embedded motion control systems for advanced 3D Printing. I have put together a small design studio to develop Large Scale 3D Printing and address manufacturing of Custom Design Modules.
